Heisann, folkens!

Every week we will be sharing a little of what goes on behind the scenes of the audio department at Antagonist. Dan, head of audio stuff, splits his time between his studio where he writes and mixes music, the office where he sits to edit and develop the design of the audio, and various locations around and about where he records environment sounds, wildlife, ambience, etc.

So, in these weekly updates we’ll be looking at all these things, from making sound effects and music to recording in general.

Dan will share some pictures, videos and blogs about what he’s up to and display it here for your viewing pleasure. There may even be a tutorial or two about his process, so look out for those.

This week’s audio news:

So, a few weeks ago I was tasked with writing the main menu theme for Through the Woods. Quite the assignment! And, after delivering the music and waiting a few days for a little feedback, the past days have seen me playing with a couple of suggestions. It’s a bit of a stringy, swoopy, epic affair with glitchy crackles and scratchy cellos to bring the sound more in line with the look of the game (there’s a bit of film grain and dust on the camera lens).

The piece was inspired the tiniest bit by Wojciech Kilar’s work in the film, Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I heard the same music recently while watching American Horror Story, Murder House and went straight to the piano to write. If you’re interested in film scores, you should really check him out.

So the next few days will see me going through a little re-writing of the intro, editing and mixing, then setting the track up to loop with no break in the music. This is slightly harder than it sounds with the type of music I’m writing for the game as, for this track anyway, I’m not using much percussion. It’s usually easy to hide the loop better by using a cymbal or fading to silence, but this piece will just loop around. So at the moment we have a quiet intro leading to the main section and a crescendo which then eases off before rejoining the intro again.

At some point I’m going to create a Soundcloud page for Through the Woods, so keep your eyes out for that.

Yes, that’s what I’m working on this week. If you have any questions, please leave a comment, or send an email to dan@antagonist.no.

Until next time.

Dan
